Tukaram Gatha Abhanga 58 - Baail savaasin aai - बाईल सवासिण आई

In this abhanga, Saint Tukaram is criticising a vile person who has recklessly gone astray from religion and disrespects the sanctity of religious practices.

English
1.     Baail savaasin aai, aapan pitaranche thai
2.     Thor vech jalaa nashta, avaghya apasavya cheshta
3.     Vishayanche charvanee, kelee aayushyachee galanee
4.     Tuka mhane landa, nahee daya dev dhonda.

Translation
1.   One person performed a religious rite of praying for peace and progress of his deceased parent's souls by performing pooja and offering food to brahmins (called Shraddha). However, instead of inviting a Brahmin woman for eating the offering of food to his mother's soul, he made his wife sit and eat it. Instead of inviting a Brahmin priest to eat the offering of food for his father's soul, he himself sat down and ate it. (He behaved recklessly, showing no respect for the religious ritual specified for peace and progress of the soul).
2.   Oh, evil man, you have done a great damage to yourself by this straying away from religion. Because, you have done everything exactly opposite what is specified in the religion. You have made a mimicry of a religious rite.
3.   You have wasted your entire life only in gratification of senses.
4.   Tuka says, this vile person, who has gone astray from religion, has no mercy. He treats God and stone in the same manner.
