Tukaram Gatha Abhanga 11 - Avagunache hatee ahe awageech fajitee - अवगुणाचे हाती

अवगुणाचे हाती | आहे अवघीच फजीती ||१||
नाही पाञासवें चाड | प्रमाण तें फिकें गोड ||२||
विष तांब्या वाटी | भरली लाऊं नये होठी ||३||
तुका म्हणे भाव | शुद्ध बरा सोंग वाव ||४||

Reading in English

1. Avagunache hatee, aahe awaghee fajitee

2. Nahi patrasave chad, pramaan te fike goad

3. Vish tambya vatee, bharalee lavoo naye hothee

4. Tuka mhane bhaav, shuddh baraa soang vav.

Translation

This abhanga is about purity of feeling and avoidance of bad company.

1. Vice invariably leads to complete embarrassment!
2. When a vessel is containing a substance, what really matters is the good or bad in the substance and it is not decided by the material of the vessel.
3. A poison, even if it is in a vessel of the holy metal copper, should not be taken to the lips.
4. Tuka says, purity if the feeling the heart is what matters, deceptive exterior appearance is bad.
