Tukaram Gatha Abhanga 52

देखोनि हरखली अंड । पुत्र जाला म्हणे रांड ।

तंव तो जाला भांड । चाहाड चोरटा शिंदळ ।।१।।

जाय तिकडे पीडी लोकां । जोडी भांडवल थुंका ।

थोर जाला चुका । वर कां नाहीं घातली ।।२।।

भूमि कांपे त्याच्या भारें । कुंभपाकाचीं शरीरें ।

निष्ठुर उत्तरें । पापदृष्टी मळिणचित्त ।।३।।

दुराचारी तो चांडाळ । पाप सांगातें विटाळ ।

तुका म्हणे खळ । म्हणोनियां निषिद्ध तो ।।४।। 

English

1. Dekhoni harkhalee anda, putra jalaa mhane rand

Tav to jaala bhaand, chahaad chorataa shindal

2. Jay tikade pidee lokaa, jodee bhandaval thunka

Thor jaala chukaa, var kaa nahee ghatalee

3. Bhumi kaape tyachyaa bhaare, kumbhapakachee shareere

Nishthur uttare, paapdrushtee malinchitta

4. Duracharee to chandaal, paap sangate vitaal

Tuka mhane khal, mhanoniya nishiddh to.

Translation

A woman who was desperate to have a son, finally gave birth to a male child. But he turned out to be a devilish character. Saint Tukaram is telling us about his ways and deplores him.

1. When a woman saw that her newborn baby was a boy, she was overjoyed. But, as he grew, he turned out to be quarrelsome, a slanderer, a thief and a whorish person.
2. Wherever he went, he troubled people. So they spat on him with hatred. That was the only capital he collected! His mother felt that she had made a grave mistake. Why did she not finish him as soon as he was born?
3. He is so bad that the earth trembles due to his load on her. His body itself is a manifestation of hell. He always speaks in a merciless manner. His eyes are evil and his heart is filthy.
4. This wretch is a man of evil ways. He carries the filth of his sins with him. Tuka says, he is an utterly evil person. Hence he should be deplored.
