In this abhanga, Saint Tukaram is elaborating on the obstacles one encounters due to his ego.

उपाधीच्या नांवे घेतला शिंतोडा | नेदुं आतां पीडा आतळो तें ।।१।।
कशासाठीं हात भरूनि धुवावे | चालतिया गोवे मारगासि ।।२।।
कांहीं नाहीं देवे करूनि ठेविलें | असे ते आपुलें ते ते ठायीं ।।३।।
तुका म्हणे जेव्हां गेला अहंकार | तेव्हा आपपर बोळविले ।।४।।

 

English

Upaadheechyaa naave ghetala shintoda, nendu ataa pida aatalo te
Kashasathee haat bharuni dhuvaave, chaltiya gove maragaasi
Kahee nahee deve karuni thevile, ase te aapule te te thayi
Tuka mhane jevhaa gela ahankaar, tevhaa aapapar bolavile.

Translation
I have sanctified myself by sprinkling cow urine on things like attachment to the subjects of the bodily senses and attachment to the world. Now, these worries will not bother me anymore.
(There is an old practice of sprinkling cow urine on an object which may be considered as soiled or which has lost its sanctity. It is believed that cow urine has the property to sanctify the things it touches).

Why should one resort to soiling one's hands in filth and washing them again and again? It only creates obstacles in progressing on the path.

Is there anything that God has not created for us? Everything that God has created is ours and is for us. (You realize this and experience this when the ego is dissolved).

Tuka says, when the ego vanishes, the feeling of 'mine' and 'yours' (which is a product of Duality) vanishes.

There was a contemporary of Saint Tukaram, who was very jealous about his poetry. His name was Salo Malo. He was desperately trying to copy Saint Tukaram's style, words and struggling to make poems. He was also trying to convince everybody that his poetry was better than Saint Tukaram's. There were others too, like Salo Malo. This abhanga has a reference to such fake poets.

माझी पाठ करा कवी । उट लावी दारोदार ।।१।।

तंव तया पारखी सिव । लाजे ठाव सांडितां ।।२।।

उष्टावळी करूनि जमा । कुंथूनि प्रेमा आणितसे ।।३।।

तुका म्हणे बाहेरमुदी । आहाच गोविंदीं न सरती ।।४।। 


English

Mazee paath karaa kavee, uta lavee darodaar

Tav taya parkhee siv, laaje thaav sanditaa

Uashtavalee karuni jamaa, kunthuni prema aanitase

Tuka mhane baahermudee, aahach Govindee na sartee.


Translation

Those who are faking as poets, go after people and pester them to read their poems and remember them by heart.

But the wise people test them, find their worthlessness and embarrass them. Then these embarrassed poets immediately leave the scene, ashamed.

This kind of a poet steals a few words from other poets and with a great struggle, tries to show that his poems are divinely blessed.

Tuka says. Their pretence is useless. Their poetry never reaches God.

These are very holy abhangas, composed by Saint Tukaram, while on his way to Vaikuntha. They are known as 'Bara abhang' or 'Nirvaniche abhanga'. If anyone recites them 7 times in a row his wish will be fulfilled. हे तुकाराम महाराजांचे बारा अभंग निर्वाणीचे अभंग किंवा निर्याणीचे अभंग म्हणून पण प्रसिद्ध आहेत. हे अतिशय पवित्र आहेत. एखादी इच्छा मनात धरून जर हे अभंग सात वेळा सतत म्हंटले तर इच्छापूर्ती होईल.



जन्माचे ते मूळ पाहिले शोधून । दु:खासी कारण जन्म घ्यावा ।। पाप पुण्य करूनी जन्मा येतो प्राणी । नरदेही येऊनी हानी केली । । रज तम सत्त्व आहे ज्याचे अंगी । याच गुणे जगी वाया गेला । । तम म्हणजे काय नर्क केवळ । रज तो सकळ मायाजाळ । । तुका म्हणे येथे सत्वाचे सामर्थ्य । करावा परमार्थ अहर्निशी । । १ ।।



अहर्निशी सदा परमार्थ करावा । पाय न ठेवावा आडमार्गी । । आडमार्गी कोणी जन जे जातील । त्यातून काढील तोची ज्ञानी । । तोची ज्ञानी खरा तारी दूजियासी । वेळोवेळा यासी शरण जावे । । शरण गेलीयाने काय होते फळ । तुका म्हणे कूळ उद्धरीले ।। २ ।।



उद्धरीले कूळ आपण तरला । पूर्ण तोचि झाला त्र्यैलोक्यात ।।

त्र्यैलोक्यात झाले द्वैतची निमाले । ऐसे साधियेले साधन बरवे ।। बरवे साधन सुखशांति मना । क्रोध नाही जना तीळभरी ।। तीळभरी नाही चित्तासी तो मळ । तुका म्हणे जळ गंगेचे ते । । ३ ।।



जैसी गंगा वाहे तैसे त्याचे मन । भगवंत जाण त्याचेजवळी । । त्याचे जवळी देव भक्तीभावे उभा । स्वानंदाचा गाभा तया दिसे।। तया दिसे रूप अंगुष्ठ प्रमाण । अनुभवी खूण जाणती हे।। जाणती जे खूण स्वात्मअनुभवी । तुका म्हणे पदवी ज्याची त्याला।। ४ ।।



ज्याची त्याला पदवी इतरां न साजे । संताला उमजे आत्मसुख । आत्मसुख घ्या रे उघड़ा ज्ञानदृष्टी । यावीण चावटी करू नका । करू नका काही संतसंग धरा । पूर्वीच़ा तो दोरा उगवेल ।। उगवेल प्रारब्ध संतसंगेकरुनी । प्रत्यक्ष पुराणी वर्णियेले।। वर्णियेले एका गुणनामघोषे । जातील रे दोष तुका म्हणे।। ५ ।।



दोष रे जातील अनंत जन्मींचे । पाय त्या देवाचे न सोडावे ।। न सोडावे पाय निश्चय तो करा । आळवा शारंगधरा भावबळे ।। भावबळे आणा धरोनी केशवा । पापिया न कळे काही केल्या ।। न कळे तो देव संतसंगावाचुनी । वासना जाळोनी शुद्ध करा ।। शुद्ध करा मन देहातीत व्हावे । वस्तुसी ओळखावे तुका म्हणे ।।६ ।।



ओळखा रे वस्तु सांडा रे कल्पना । नका आडराना जाऊ तुम्ही ।। झणी जाल कोठे बुडवाल हीत । विचारी मनास आपुलीया ।। आपुलीया जीवे शिवासी भजावे । आत्मसुख घ्यावे वेळोवेळा ।। घ्यावे आत्मसुख स्वरूपी मिळावे । भूती लीन व्हावे तुका म्हणे ।। ७ ।।



भूती लीन व्हावे सांगावे न लगेची । आता अहंकाराची शांति करा ।। शांति करा तुम्ही अहंता नसावी । अंतरी नसावी भूतदया ।। भूतदया ठेवा मग काय उणे । प्रथम साधन हेचि असे ।। असे हे साधन ज्याचे चित्ती वसे । मायाजाळ नासे तुका म्हणे ।। ८ ।।



मायाजाळ नासे या नामे करोनी । प्रीति चक्रपाणि असो द्यावी ।। असो द्यावी प्रीति साधूंचे पायासी । कदा कीर्तनासी सोडू नये ।। सोडू नये पुराण श्रवण कीर्तन । मनन निदिध्यासन साक्षात्कार ।। साक्षात्कार झालीया सहज समाधी । तुका म्हणे उपाधि गेली त्याची ।। ९।।



गेली त्याची जाणा ब्रह्म तोची झाला । अंतरी निवाला पूर्णपणे ।। पूर्णपणे झाला राहतो कैशा रीती । त्याची आता स्थिती सांगतो मी ।। सांगतो मी तुम्हा ऐका मनोगत । राहतो मूर्खवत जगामाजी ।। जगात पिशाच्च अंतरी शहाणा । सदा ब्रह्मी जाणा निमग्न तो ।। निमग्न तो सदा जैसा मकरंद । अंतर्बाह्य भेद वेगळाले ।। वेगळाले भेद किती त्या असती । ह्रदगत्याची गती न कळे कोणा ।। न कळे कोणा त्याचे हेचि वर्म । योगी जाणे वर्म खूण त्याची ।। खूण त्यांची जाणा जे तैसे असती । तुका म्हणे भ्रांति दूजीयाला ।।१० ।।



दुजीयाला भ्रांती भावीकाला शांती । साधूंची ती वृत्ती लीन झाली ।। लीन झाली वृत्ती स्वरूपी मिळाले । जळात आटले लवण जैसे ।। लवण जैसे पुन्हा जळाचे बाहेरी । येत नाही खरे त्यातुनीया ।। त्यासारीखे जाणा तुम्ही साधूवृत्ती । पुन्हा न मिळती मायाजाळी ।। मायाजाळ त्यांना पुन्हा रे बाधेना । सत्य सत्य जाणा तुका म्हणे ।। ११ ।।



सत्य सत्य जाणा त्रिवाचा नेम हा । अनुभव पहा पदोपदी ।। पदोपदी पहा श्रीमुख चांगलं । प्रत्यक्ष पाऊली विठोबाची ।। विठोबाचे भेंटी हरेल बा चिंता । तुम्हालागी आता सांगितले ।। सांगितले खरे विश्वाचिया हीता । अभंग वाचिता जे का नर ।। ते नर पठणी जीवन्मुक्त झाले । पुन्हा नाही आले संसारासी ।। संसार उडाला संदेह फिटला । पूर्ण तोचि झाला तुका म्हणे ।। १२।।



स्वर्गलोकीहूनी आले हे अभंग । धाडियेले सांग तुम्हालागी ।। नित्य नेमों यासी पढ़ता प्रतापे । जळतील पापे जन्मांतरीची ।। तया मागे-पुढे रक्षी नारायण । मांडील्या निर्वाण उडी घाली ।। बुद्धीचा पालट नासेल कुमती । होईल सद्भक्ती येणे पंथे ।। सद्भक्ती झालीया सहज साक्षात्कार । होईल उद्धार पूर्वजांचा ।। साधतील येणे इहपर लोक । सत्य सत्य भाक माझी तुम्हा ।। परोपकारासाठी सांगितले देवा प्रासादिक मेवा ग्रहण करा ।। येणे भवव्यथा जाईल तुमची । सख्या विठ्ठलाची आण मज ।। टाळ आणि कंथा धाडिली निशाणी । घ्यारे ओळखोनि सज्जन हो ।। माझे दण्डवत तुम्हा सर्व लोका । देहासहित तुका वैकुंठासी  ।। १३।।
