Tukaram Gatha abhang 54 - Mazi path kara kavi - माझी पाठ करा कवी उट लावी...

There was a contemporary of Saint Tukaram, who was very jealous about his poetry. His name was Salo Malo. He was desperately trying to copy Saint Tukaram's style, words and struggling to make poems. He was also trying to convince everybody that his poetry was better than Saint Tukaram's. There were others too, like Salo Malo. This abhanga has a reference to such fake poets.

माझी पाठ करा कवी । उट लावी दारोदार ।।१।।

तंव तया पारखी सिव । लाजे ठाव सांडितां ।।२।।

उष्टावळी करूनि जमा । कुंथूनि प्रेमा आणितसे ।।३।।

तुका म्हणे बाहेरमुदी । आहाच गोविंदीं न सरती ।।४।। 


English

Mazee paath karaa kavee, uta lavee darodaar

Tav taya parkhee siv, laaje thaav sanditaa

Uashtavalee karuni jamaa, kunthuni prema aanitase

Tuka mhane baahermudee, aahach Govindee na sartee.


Translation

Those who are faking as poets, go after people and pester them to read their poems and remember them by heart.

But the wise people test them, find their worthlessness and embarrass them. Then these embarrassed poets immediately leave the scene, ashamed.

This kind of a poet steals a few words from other poets and with a great struggle, tries to show that his poems are divinely blessed.

Tuka says. Their pretence is useless. Their poetry never reaches God.
