Tukaram Gatha Abhanga 46

करावी ते पूजा मनेंचि उत्तम । लौकिकाचें काम काय असे ॥१॥

कळावें तयासि कळे अंतरींचें । कारण तें साचें साच अंगीं ॥२॥

अतिशयाअंतीं लाभ किंवा घात । फळ देतें चित्त बीजाऐसें ॥३॥

तुका म्हणे जेणें राहे समाधान । ऐसें तें भजन पार पावी ॥४॥

English

1. Karavee te pooja manechi uttam, laukikache kaam kaay ase
2. Kalaave tayaasi kale antariche, kaaran te saache saach angee
3. Atishayaantee laabh kinvaa ghaat, phal dete chitta beejaaise
4. Tukaa mhane jene raahe samadhan, aise te bhajan paar pavee.

Translation

In this abhanga, saint Tukaram is stressing the important of genuineness of love and devotion to God. He says that external false show will be dangerous.

1. The best way to workshop God is by Mental Worship. Where is the need for external aids (such as utensils, oil lamp, flowers, incense stick etc.)?
2. The One to whom this mental Worship is offered, understands the true feeling and receives it (God). The real fruit of an act is obtained only if it is done with a genuine good intention.
3. If there is an overstress on external aids, then it may sometimes give a good result or may even end in a disaster. The fruit you get is as the seed you bought in the heart.
4. Tuka says, chanting and singing of God's name and glory (bhajan) alone gets a person across this ocean of material existence, to the Transcendental Truth, which is God.
