Tukaram Gatha Abhanga 42

वृत्ति भूमि राज्य द्रव्य उपार्जिती । जाणा त्या निश्चितीं देव नाहीं ।।१।। 
भाडेकरी वाहे पाठीवरी भार । अंतरींचें सार लाभ नाहीं ।।२।।

देवपुजेवरी ठेवूनियां मन । पाषाणा पाषाण पूजी लोभें ।।३।।

तुका म्हणे फळ चिंतिती आदर । लाघव हे चार शिंदळीचे ।।४।।

English

1. Vrutti bhoomi rajya dravya uparjitee, janaa tya nischitee dev naahi
2. Bhadekaree vaahe paathivar bhaar, antareeche saar laabh naahi
3. Devpujevaree theuniyaa man, pashaana pashaan pujee lobhe
4. Tukaa mhane phal chintitee aadar, laaghav he chaar shindaliche.

Translation

This abhanga is a strong criticism of people who have desire and greed in their mind while trying to seek God.

1. Know it for sure, that, those who obtain land, kingdom and wealth while outwardly seeking God will not get God (meet God).
2. A porter has to only carry the load on his back. He doesn't get a share of its contents.
3. If a man is worshipping an idol with some material desire (which will satisfy the senses temporarily), then it is equivalent to a situation of one stone worshipping another stone!
4. Tuka says, there are people who do various deeds (karmas) with a longing and adulation for their fruits. This love of theirs is like the love showered by a prostitute.
