कल्पतरु रुया नव्हती बाभुळा । पुरविती फळा इच्छितिया ॥१॥

उदंड त्या गाई म्हैसी आणि शेळया । परि त्या निराळ्या कामधेनु ॥२॥

तुका म्हणे देव दाखवील दृष्टी । तया सवें भेटी थोर पुण्य॥३॥

Roman Script

1. Kalpataru ruya navhtee baabhula, puravitee fala ichhitiya

2. Udand tya gaayi mhaisee aani shelya, pari tya niraalya kaamadhenu

3. Tuka mhane dev daakhavil drushtee, taya save bhetee thor punya.

Translation

1. A 'Rui' tree (Calotropis gigantea, the crown flower) or a 'Babhali' tree (Acasia), these are not 'Kalpavruksha' (the tree that fulfils any wish). They will never be able to give what you want.

2. There are many cows, buffaloes and goats, but the Kamadhenu cow, which fulfils all your wishes, is completely different from these.

3. Tuka says, God shows you various things or people. It is a great 'punya' (virtue) to meet them.

विटाळ तो परद्रव्य परनारी । येथुनि जो दुरी तो सोंवळा ॥१॥

गद्यें पद्यें कांहीं न धरावी उपाधी । स्वाधीन चि बुद्धी करुनी ठेवा ॥२॥

विचाराचें कांहीं करावें स्वहित । पापपुण्यातीत भांडवल ॥३॥

तुका म्हणे न लगे जावें वनांतरा । विश्वं विश्वंभरा सारिखेंचि ॥४॥

1. Vital to pardravya paranaaree, yethuni jo duree to sovala

2. Gadye padye kaahee na dharaavee upaadhee, swaadheen chi budhee karunee theva

3. Vichaaranche kaahee karaave swahit, paapapunyaateet bhaandaval

4. Tuka mhane na lage jaave vanaantara, Vishva vishvambhara saarikhechi.

Translation

1. Coveting someone else's wealth or woman, are really the untouchable, inauspicious activities (Tukaram Maharaj has compared them to the process of menstruation). The man who keeps away from them is really a true holy man.

2. One should not create any obstacles (in spirituals pursuit) by taking up writing or composing poetry (meaning trying to be a pundit). It's better to be in charge of our own intellect (and use it for spiritual growth).

3. One should think deeply about spirituality and earn the capital (wealth) of Self Realization, which transcends virtue and vice.

4. Tuka says, it is not necessary to go to jungles for getting this joy. This Universe and the God who created this Universe, are not different from each other. God is omnipresent everywhere.

तैसे अधमाचे गुण । एकविध नाही मन ॥२॥

उपजता बरे दिसे । रूप वाढे तो तो नासे ॥३॥

तुका म्हणे भुंकते वेळे । वेळ अवेळ न कळे ॥४॥

1. Gaadhavaache taanhe, paalatate kshanekshane

2. Taise adhamaache gun, ekvidh naahee man

3. Upajata bare dise, roop vaadhe to to naase

4. Tuka mhane bhunkate vele, vel avel na kale.

Translation

1. A foal looks very cute when it's small. But, its qualities keep changing every moment while it is growing. It starts inclining towards stupidity.

2. A man is similar to this foal. His mind is never steady at one place. He just cannot concentrate.

3. The foal looks very beautiful when it's born. But as the age increases, its looks start becoming ugly.

4. Tuka says, such foal (or even man) starts barking at any time, without thinking whether it's the right time to bark or not.

1. Maoo menaahoon aamhee Vishnudaas, kathin vajraas bhedu aise

2. Mele jeet aso nijoniya jaage, jo jo je je maage te te deu

3. Bhale taree deu kaasechee langotee, naathaalaachee maathee haanu kaathee

4. Maayabaapaahunee bahu maayaavant, karu ghaatapaat shatruhoonee

5. Amrut te kaay goad aamha pudhe, vish te baapude kadoo kitee

6. Tuka mhane aamhee avaghechi goad, jyaachee pure kod tyaache paree.

Translation

1. We ‘Vishnudas’ (servants of Vishnu) are softer than wax and at the same time we are so hard that we can break even the hardest weapon called ‘vajra’.

2. We are dead from the materialistic point of view, but we are awake spiritually. Whatever people ask for, we will give that to them.

3. To those who are good we will give away, even the inner most undergarment (Meaning, there is nothing that we will refuse to give them). But for the troublesome and harassing people we will hit them with a stick on their head.

4. We are more loving than even parents. However, if there is a need, we can carry out destruction more severe than our enemies also.

5. The sweetness of elixir is nothing in front of us. The bitterness of poison looks like nothing in front of us.

6. Tuka says, we are sweet from all sides, in all ways. Whatever may be the desire of a person, we will fulfil it in that manner.

काळ सारावा चिंतनें । एकांतवासीं गंगास्नानें ।

देवाचें पूजने । प्रदक्षणा तुळसीच्या ॥१॥

युक्त आहार विहार । नेम इंद्रियांसी सार ।

नसावी बासर । निद्रा बहु भाषण ॥२॥

परमार्थ महाधन । जोडी देवाचे चरण ।

व्हावया जतन । हे उपाय लाभाचे ॥३॥

देह समर्पिजे देवा । भार कांहींच न घ्यावा ।

होईल आघवा । तुका म्हणे आनंद ॥४॥

1. Kaal saaraava chintane, ekaantavaasee gangaasnaane

Devaache poojane, pradakshana tulaseechya

2. Yukt aahaar vihaar, nem indriyaansee saar

Nasaavee baasar, nidra bahu bhaashan

3. Paramaarth mahaadhan, jodee devaache charan

Vhaavaya jatan, he upaay laabhaache

4. Deh samarpije deva, bhaar kaahich na ghyaava

Hoyil aaghava, Tuka mhane aanand.

Translation

Saint Tukaram is giving a detailed guidance on how a devotee should live his life.

1. A man should spend his whole life in remembering God and chanting his name. He should stay in solitude and bathe in the holy water of Ganga. He should perform pooja. He should do perambulations around the holy Tulsi plant.

2. He should eat the foods permitted by religion, after performing the activities prescribed by religion (vidhi). He should take rest in moderation. He should not have excessive engagement in sensual pleasures. That's the essence for a happy life. He should not be reckless or too talkative. He should not sleep too much.

3. He should treat thoughts about spiritual pursuit as a great treasure and develop attachment to God's feet. The more he will develop this attachment, the more he will stand to benefit.

आहे तरिं सत्ता । ऐशा करितों वारता ॥१॥

अंगसंगाचीं उत्तरें । सलगी सेवन लेंकुरें ॥२॥

तुका म्हणे रुची । येथें भिन्नता कैची ॥४॥

1. Aahe tari satta, aisha karito vaarata

2. Angasangaachee uttare, salagee sevan lekuare

3. Taree nikatvaase, aso aashankechya naase

4. Tuka mhane ruchee, yethe bhinnata kaichee.

Translation

1. Oh God, I have some emotional authority on You. I have some right on You (due to my attachment with You). That's why I am talking so boldly with You.

2. We are also Your children. That's why we are so close with You and we keep talking to You like children, with a great attachment.

3. I'll get rid of all doubts from my mind and stay very close to You all the time.

4. Tuka, says, I have a great liking for this closeness. In this, there is no duality.

मी कां पडेन निराळा । ऐसा सांडूनि सोहळा ॥२॥

तुका म्हणे जोडुनि पाय । पुढें उगा उभा राहें ॥४॥

1. Maazee bhaktee bholee, ekvidha bhaav balee

2. Mee ka paden niraala, aisa saandoni sohala

3. Aata anaarisa, yethe na vhaave sahasa

4. Tuka mhane joduni paay, pudhe uga ubha raahe.

Translation

1. Oh God! My devotion for you is innocent. It has loyalty and emotional attachment.

2. It’s a kind of festival, which I'll never leave. I will never become separate from You.

3. It will not be possible for me to separate myself from all this.

4. Tuka says, Oh Lord! Pl align your feet together and stand quietly in front of me. I want to rest me head on them.

कासया रूपा । नावां आलेति गा बापा ।।३।।

1. Tumacha tumhee kela gova, aata chukavita deva

2. Kaise sare chaalavane, kele kashaala shahaane

3. Kaasaya roopa, naava aaleti ga baapa

4. Tuka mhane aata, na sare havaale ghaalita.

Translation

1. Oh God! You have created a complication by manifesting Yourself (in the form of this Universe). Now why are You dodging Your own creation?

2. Now, how can You deceive us? That will not work. Why have You given us this human birth and made us wise and understanding?

3. Why have You earned Your fame as the saviour of the downtown? The lover of the devotees, the ocean of mercy and so on?

4. Tuka says, now You cannot just go on giving assurances anymore. You will have to bless me.

1. Oh God! It is my wish that I should get shelter at Your feet.

2. Is there anything that You do not have? Will You incur any loss if you just satisfy me? If you just console me?

3. My mind has become crazy with the desire to serve you.

4. Tuka says, Oh Lord Narayan, the one who is always bound (in love) with his devotees! Understand my mind and fulfil my desire.

1. Now there is a complete breakup between me and all the material things. So, now I am completely shelter less.

2. Now I have no relation with anyone else. I am flowing in the waters of the river of devotion.

3. I have lost my attraction for household life. So it is as good as completely destroyed. My passion for household life is completely gone.

4. Tuka says, Oh God! Now please do not keep any distance between you and me.

Translation

1. If you do something with determination, it becomes a sweet act and everybody admires it.

2. Oh God! When my mind is fully concentrated at your feet, I will present a beautiful dance to you.

3. My mind will be filled with joy when I see that my master is watching me with great attention.

4. Tuka says, please assure me. Please give me love.

Translation

1. Oh God do I have to tell you this? Don't you know that I really love to talk to you?

2. Oh all-encompassing Lord, please don't play a mischief of confusing me completely.

3. Please do (give me) what I really Desire. You are residing inside my heart. So you know everything.

4. If you do that I will be completely satisfied and my mind will be free from all burdens.

1. Varma tari aamha daava, kaay deva jaane mee

2. Bahuta rangee heen jaalo, tari aalo sharan

3. Dyaal jari tumhee dheer, hoeel sthir man thaayi

4. Tuka mhane sattabale, ladivaale raakhaavee.

Translation

1. Oh God please show me the key to reaching you because I just don't know how to do that.

2. My senses have taken me to very low levels, because of their indulgence in sensual pleasures. I have become desperate and I surrender at your feet.

3. My mind will become stable and I will be able to concentrate at your feet, only if you console me.

4. Tuka says,Oh God! Please use your authority, your power and protect this doted child of yours.

4. Tuka mhane kaay gumfoni dukaana, raaho Naaraayana karuni ghaat.

Translation

1. Oh God! Should I just deceive people by pretending to people that I am your devotee? Only for filling my stomach? (Just for earning my daily bread?)

2. If that is indeed your plan please tell me. I have become very desperate for your Darshan.

3. Tell me Oh my Lord. Do you want me to spend my whole life just trying to put words together and somehow writing traditional poetry?" (I want to get the experience of meeting you and writing that experience. The words of an ascended master are holy).

4. Tuka says, Should I just remain what I am? Should I just run my grocery shop and make a big damage to myself? (If I keep doing that, I will not be able to meet you. I don't want to do that. Bless me with your darshan Lord!)

कासयाने गोडी उपजावा विश्वास | प्रीती कांहीं रस वांचुनियां ||३||

तुका म्हणे अगा चतुराशिरोमणी | विचारावें मनीं केशीराजा ||४||

1. Mhanauni daas navhe aisa zaalo, anubhave bola swaameepudhe

2. Ka naahee vachan pratiuttaraache, meech maazya veche attahaase

3. Kaasayaane goadee upajaava vishwaas, preetee kaahee ras vaachuniya

4. Tuka mhane aga chaturaashiromanee, vichaaraave manee kesheeraaja.

Translation

1. I have been calling myself as Your servant. But, it is a good as not being your servant (You haven't accepted me as Your servant). I am telling this to You, my Master, from my own experience.

2. I talk to so much. Why don't You speak even one word in reply? Very adamantly I just go on and on.

3. Oh God! How am I going to develop liking for You and trust in You? It seems there is no love between You and me.

4. Oh, the wisest among the wise, Oh God! Engage Your mind in thinking about this.

जीव जायवरी सांडी करी माता । हे तों आश्चर्यता बाळकाची ॥१॥

दुर्बळ कीं नाहीं आइकत कानीं । काय नारायणीं न्यून जालें ॥२॥

क्षणक्षणा माझा नेघावा सांभाळ । अभाग्याचा काळ ऐसा आला ॥३॥

तुका म्हणे नाहीं वचनासी रुचि । फलकट वेंचि तें तें होय ॥४॥

1. Jeev jaayavaree saandee karee maata, he to aascharyata baalakaachee

2. Durbal kee naahee aaikat kaanee, kaay Naaraayanee nyoon zaale

3. Kshanaakshana maaza neghaava saambhaal, abhaagyaacha kaal aisa aala

4. Tuka mhane naahee vachanaasee ruchee, falakat vechi te te hoy.

Translation

1. It is very strange that this Mother has disowned her child, even when he's dying.

2. Oh Mother, are You weak? Why are You not lending an ear to what I am saying? Or, have You developed any deficiency?

3. It seems I have fallen (landed) into bad times. You are deliberately not going to protect me at any time.

4. Tuka says, my words are devoid of any sweetness. They have become tasteless like the dross of a grain.

Tukaram Gatha Abhanga 608 - Naahee ullanghile konaache

नाहीं उल्लंघिले कोणाचे वचन । मज कां नारायण दुरी जाला ॥१॥

अशंकितें मनें करीं आळवण । नाहीं समाधान निश्चिन्तीचें ॥२॥

दासांचा विसर हें तों अनुचित । असे सर्व नीत पायांपाशीं ॥३॥

तुका म्हणे तुम्हां लाज येत नाहीं । आम्हां चिंताडोहीं बुडवितां ॥४॥

1. Naahee ullanghile konaache vachan, maj ka Naaraayan duree jaala

2. Ashankite mane karee aalavan, naahee samaadhaan nischhintiche

3. Daasaanch visar he to anuchit, ase sarva neet payanpashee

4. Tuka mhane tumha laaj yet naahee, aamha chintaadohee budavita.

Translation

1. I have not crossed any limits specified by the scriptures and the saints. Then why has this Shri Narayan kept himself so far away from me?

2. I am continuously praying, with this doubt in my mind. But, I am not able to find any sign that I should stop worrying. It doesn't satisfy me.

3. You have forgotten your servant and that's not right. You are a supposed to be a model of ethical behaviour. Still you are behaving like this!

4. Tuka says, Oh God! Don’t you feel any shame while drowning us in an ocean of worries, in this way?

Tukaram Gatha Abhanga 607 - Kaay krupevin ghaalaave

काय कृपेविण घालावें सांकडें । निश्चिन्ति निवाडें कोण्या एका ॥१॥

आहों तैसीं पुढें असों दीनपणें । वेचूनि वचनें करुणेचीं ॥२॥

धरूंनि भय आतां काय वाहों चिंता । काय करूं आतां आप्तपण ॥३॥

तुका म्हणे आम्ही भावहीन जीव । म्हणउनी देव दुरे दुरी ॥४॥

Roman Text

1. Kaay krupevin ghaalaave saakade, nischhint nivaade konya eka

2. Aaho taisee pudhe aso deenapane, vechuni vachane karunechee

3. Dharuni bhay aata kaay vaaho chinta, kaay karu aata aaptapan

4. Tuka mhane aamhee bhaavaheen jeev, mhanaunee dev dure duree.

Translation

1. You haven't yet blessed me (with your darshan). You haven't done anything that should make me completely from worries. Still, why should I insist* that You must bless me?

2. I will remain unchanged as I am at present, keeping on pleading for Mercy.

3. Why should I have fear in my mind and keep worrying? What is the use of our relationship?

4. Tuka says, I am a mortal, devoid of devotion. That's the reason God has moved away from me.

(The word used here is ‘Sakade'. It means asking for something so strongly that the giver is virtually forced to fulfil the desire of the needy person. It's a kind of emotional blackmail. This is done generally by a devotee to God, asking for a favour very forcefully).

आम्ही शक्तिहीनें । कैसें कराल तें नेणें । लिगाडाच्या गुणें । खोळंबला राहिलों ॥१॥

माझें मज देई देवा । असे ठेविला तो ठेवा । नाहीं करीत हेवा । कांहीं अधिक आगळा ॥२॥

नाहीं गळां पडलों झोंड । तुमचें तेंचि माझें तोंड । चौघां चार खंड । लांबणी हे अनुचित ॥३॥

नाहीं येत बळा । आतां तुम्हांसी गोपाळा । तुका म्हणे गळा । उगवा पायां लागतों ॥४॥

Roman Text

1. Aamhee shaktiheene, kaise karaal te nene, Ligaadaachya gune, kholambala raahilo

2. Maaze maj dei deva, ase thevila to theve, Naahee karit heva, kaahee adheek aagala

3. Naahee gala padalo zond, tumache techi maaze tond, Chaugha chaar khand, laambanee he anuchit

4. Naahee yet bala, aata tumhaasee Gopala, Tuka mhane gala, ugava paaya laagato.

Translation

1. Oh God! I am weak. I don't know how You are going to bless me (and manifest Thyself to me). You are habituated to keeping people pestering You like this. That's why I have been made to wait for long like this.

2. Oh God! Please return my own precious possession (my Self Realization) to me; that's the one which I had kept with You. I am not greedy for anything more than that.

3. It's not that I have fallen in Your neck, without any prior connection with You. I will speak the same thing that You speak. Why don't You call a couple of people to judge and tell them to resolve this matter, once and for all? It's not good to keep this matter lingering for long.

4. Tuka says, Oh Lord Gopal! I am not trying to force You. I am resting my head at Your feet and requesting You to set me free from the binding to this mortal existence.

जडलों अंगाअंगीं | मग ठेवीं ये प्रसंगीं | कांहीं उरी जगीं | लोकीं आहे पुरती ||१||

ठेवीं निवारुनि आधीं | अवकाश तोचि बुद्धि | सांपडली संधी | मग बळ कोणासी ||२||

गळा बांधीन पायीं | हालों नेदीं ठायिंचे ठायीं | निवाड तो तईं | अवकळा केलिया ||३||

1. Jadalo angaaangee, mag thevee ye prasangee, Kaahee uree jagee, lokee aahe puratee

2. Thevee nivaaruni aadhee, avakaash tochi budhhi, Saapadalee sandhee, mag bal konaasee

3. Gala baandheen payee, halo nedee thaayiche thaayee, Nivaad to tai, avakala keliya

4. Tuka mhane thaave, aamha asa jee barave, Bobhaataachee save, muleehooni Vithoba.

Translation

1. Oh God! I have come to the point of having a body fight with You. At a time like this, I will not allow Your fame to remain intact. As it is, our mutual relationship is very well known to the people in the society (not so cordial)!

2. So, think well in advance. Eliminate the reason for this fight between You and me, before I lose control on my conscience. If the time comes and if I happen to trap you, then you will know who is stronger.

3. I'll tie my neck at your feet and won't allow you to move from your place. When I will embarrass you like this, the verdict will be clear as to who deviated from His duty and who did not.

4. Tuka says, Oh Vithoba! I know you very well! You have an ancient habit of keeping all your servants, shouting like this.

तुम्हां होईल देवा पडिला विसर | आम्हीं तें उत्तर यत्न केलें ||१||

पतितपावन ब्रिदें मिरविसी | याचा काय देसी झाडा सांग ||२||

आहाच मी नव्हें अर्थाचे भुकेलें | भलत्या एका बोलें वारेन तें ||३||

तुका म्हणे देह देईन सांडणें | सहित अभिमानें ओवाळुनि ||४||

1. Tumha hoaeel deva padila visar, aamhee te uttar yatna kele

2. Patitapaavan bride miravisee, yaacha kaay desee zaada saang

3. Aahaach mee navhe arthaache bhukele, bhalatya eka bole vaaren te

4. Tuka mhane deha dein saandane, sahit abhimaane ovaaluni.

Translation

1. Oh God! It seems You have forgotten me. I have been continuously pestering You to bless me and elevate me (above this material ocean and manifest Thyself to me).

2. You have always been decorated with an honour that You absolve the sinners from their sins and bless them. If You don't bless me, then how will you justify your fame?

3. I am not someone who is greedy for money. So, I'll not get fooled by a shallow promise by You to give me some material thing.

4. Tuka says, I'll sacrifice my whole body at Your feet (in Your service) with a great pride.

तुम्ही साच नुपेक्षाल हा भरवसा । मज जाणतसां अधीरसें ॥१॥

कासया घातला लांबणी उद्धार । ठेवा करकर वारूनियां ॥२॥

सुटों नये ऐसें कळले निरुतें । कां घ्यावें मागुतें आळवुनि ॥३॥

तुका म्हणे तुम्ही सभाग्य जी देवा । माझा तुम्हां केवा काय आला ॥४॥

1.      Tumhee saach nupekshaal ha bharavasaa, maj jaanatasa adheerase

2.      Kaasaya ghaatala laambanee uddhaar, theva karakar vaarooniya

3.      Suto naye aise kalale nirute, ka ghyaave maagute aalavuni

4.      Tuka mhane tumhee sabhaagya jee deva, maaza tumha keva kaay aala.

 

Translation

1.      I have full faith in You that You'll never ignore me. You are aware about how eager I am.

2.      Why have you delayed this matter of blessing me and showing me my real Self? Please do it once and for all, and get rid of my repeated pleas.

3.      Now that You aware that You are not going to escape from my repeated botheration, why are You making me plea again and again?

4.      Tuka says, Oh God! You are so fortunate!! (Meaning You have tremendous capacity). Then why should You feel it so difficult to bless me?
